Gas Service Technician Course
Course description:
In New Hampshire, there are three sections of gas technician training required to become licensed: Gas Piping Installer, Gas Installation Technician, and Gas Service Technician. These three courses build upon each other, covering the skills needed for proper installation, including piping, equipment, and service, and require a combination of 140 classroom hours and 2000 hours of on-the-job field experience. The course will follow the new PEP/CETP curriculum.
Section 1: Gas Piping Installer
This is a foundational course that teaches the basics of gas piping, including proper bonding, sizing systems, and installation. It is a prerequisite to continue on to Gas Equipment Installer and Gas Service Technician in New Hampshire and will require 60 hours of classroom instruction.
Section 2: Gas Installation Technician
This section builds upon the piping skills, focusing on the installation of gas equipment and appliances. It covers topics like venting, appliance startup, interior vapor distribution systems, and initial performance testing. This section of the course requires 40 hours of classroom education.
Section 3: Gas Service Technician
This is the most advanced level, which covers basic electricity for propane appliance services. The curriculum includes advanced topics such as measuring voltage, resistance, and current at any point in an electrical circuit; identifying functions of common sensing devices; and identifying functions of common controls and components in basic propane appliances. This section of the Gas Apprenticeship instruction requires 40 hours of instruction.
Important Note: This course does not have a hands-on component, and each candidate will need to fulfil their 2,000 hours of field training as required by the State of NH outside of the classroom and under the direct supervision of a licensed professional. Additionally, it is important to remember that any candidate fulfilling their on-the-job training hours must have proper documentation (i.e. trainee card) and be registered as a trainee with the state mechanical licensing board.
It is the sole responsibility of the trainee and their supervisor/employer to be sure that the trainee has all skill sign-offs completed, has been registered with the State of NH Office of Professional Licensing as a trainee, and has completed the required 2,000 hours of field training prior to obtaining their license.
Format and Procedures: The course will be delivered around a combination of lecture, demonstration, and relevant application. This class requires respect for yourself and others, and dedication and commitment to the educational program.
Classes will be held at Keene Community Education (in the Jonathan Daniels Building, Door B2) at 227 Maple Ave, Keene, NH. Classes will be on Saturdays starting January 3, 2026 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Successful completion of the course is based on hours of attendance and passing test scores. Students can miss no more than one class, and that class needs to be made up.
Each student is expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire class. Please note: Because this class meets just once per week, students should plan ahead and plan to attend scheduled classes with the exception of emergencies or medical exemptions.
There will be no class held on May 23, 2026.
There may be remote classes held in the event of bad weather.
